High Conservation Values (HCV)

AMFMU initiated its stakeholders’ consultation on High Conservation Values with environmental and conservation organizations, government agencies and research scientists in Kuching on 27th February 2013. Four HCVFs were identified and demarcated representing special ecosystems and virgin jungle reserves in ASDU.

Sarawak Forestry Corporation conducted the assessment of three genera of the Dipterocarps in the two HCVAs located within AMFMU (Malcom Demies & Julia Sang 2008) which contributed to the publication of the “Sarawak Plant Red List- Dipterocarpaceae” in 2014. The study reported the record of nine genera of Dipterocarpaceae family and 125 Dipterocarp species in AMFMU out of which 28 are categorized as threatened at the state level.

Samejima et al (2014) reported that the "Above Ground Biomass" of the HCVAs were 595.0 ± 157.1 tonne/ha.

Julia Sang and Bibian Diway commenced training on RTE species for AMFMU in 2017. Vilma Vodos(2017) introduced the use of Sarawak Plant Red List (Dipterocarpaceae: Volume I & II) and raised the awareness that Sarawak has the highest Dipterocarp species diversity in South East Asia with 249 species compared with 281 for the whole of Borneo and 164 for Peninsular Malaysia.

  • Vilma Vodos was commissioned to conduct RTE species assessment and related training in AMFMU HCVAs in 2019 for:
  • Identification and location of Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable Dipterocarps.
  • Development of a training kit and management recommendation.
  • Reassessment of the HCV attributes based on the Malaysian National Interpretation of High Conservation Values (2018).

Consequently, HCV1 (RTE species) was added to HCVA2.

  • Management recommendations made for the HCVAs include:
  • Protection from encroachment
  • Establish an RTE species database
  • Phenology monitoring

Vilma (2019) assessed the RTE species in the 42 ha of Water Catchment for Ayam Camp and reported that there are four (4) dipterocarp species that are at least either threatened in Sarawak or globally significant and/or endemic to Borneo:

Species SPRL IUCN (2019) Endemism WLPO 1998
D. conformis spp. borneensis Endangered Not Evaluated Borneo -
D. eurynchus Vulnerable Critically Endangered - -
Shorea pinanga Least Concern Not Evaluated Borneo Protected
Shorea woodii Endangered Not Evaluated Sarawak -

As a result of the assessment, the Ayam Water Catchment became HCVA3 for AMFMU.
